This smartphone version of the arcade ocean warfare PC game provides a simpler yet equally fulfilling experience. However, is it actually worth a playthrough? Let’s check out what it has to offer and if it’s worth a shot.
The meat of World of Warships Blitz’s gameplay are the battles themselves. Currently, only co-op and 7v7 battles with random players are the game modes, with more to be added in the future. Apart from destroying all of the opposing team’s ships, you can also capture their zones, or simply score more points (by dealing more damage) and wait until time runs out.
Before you dive into the action though, you’ll need to go through the tutorial phases at the beginning, while other scenarios are initiated every time you purchase a certain type of ship. For example, you will be taught on how to fire and accurately aim torpedoes when you buy your first destroyer. There is a learning curve needed to master the game and fortunately, the tutorials do well in guiding you on how to do so.
The controls are simplified and optimized for mobile devices. On the bottom right corner of the screen sits the steer and accelerate (and decelerate) buttons. Meanwhile, the left has the fire, zoom, and weapon switch buttons. Depending on your available equipment, there’s also the repair and fire extinguisher buttons on the center of the screen. Aiming requires you to drag your finger on the screen, putting the reticle in the best position to score direct hits.
World of Warships Blitz follows the signature Wargaming progression system: grind, gain experience, research new ships, and finally, purchase them. Rinse and repeat. It’s a slow and exhausting process, yet it does not lack excitement: you will find yourself on the bridge of a ship countless times, commandeering it to sink others.
Several countries and ship classes are well-represented in the game. These include American, Soviet, Japanese, and British ships. Note that these are mostly World War I and World War 2-era ships. You’ll be able to play as ships belonging to the Yamato-class as well as the Pennsylvania-class types, but it’ll be a slow grind. Historical accuracy is on point in this game, and if you’re a student of history, this is definitely a game you will love.
World of Warship Blitz’s presentation elements are top-notch. The ship models are similar to their real-life counterparts, while the textures are nearly at the level of the PC game, albeit a little lower. The environments are well-made, although there aren’t a lot of maps yet. In addition, the audio, especially the status announcements and chat macros are well-done, thanks to superb voice acting. The same can be said with the music (it keeps your adrenaline pumping) and sound effects which add to the immersion.
Overall, World of Warships Blitz is your typical mobile version of a Wargaming PC game. It’s a slow grind, but it’s not pay-to-win: premium players simply progress faster. With that said, its graphical elements and gameplay are what sets it apart from other naval-themed games. Despite being a new release, it is arguably the best battleship game on mobile devices.
